The most common sign is pain. Horses with back pain/ spasms often show this in their posture or in their refusal to work. A horse may compensate for the pain by changing its posture. This can result in other problems such as joint problems.
Indication of pain may be indicated by following symptoms:
- Pinning back ears when being saddled
- Abnormal posture
- Reduced performance
- Behaviour issues when being ridden
- Difficulties with gaits
- Sensitivity to touch
- General stiffness
